Causes and risk factors

Cause of the Candidose is a strong multiplication of yeast mushrooms of the kind Candida in or on the body. Candida species colonize the skin and mucous membranes in healthy people as described above. The most frequently detected yeast is Candida albicans (C. albicans). Other important pathogens of candidosis are C. glabrata, C. guilliermondii, C. tropicalis, C. krusei and C. parapsilosis.

A colonization of the skin or mucous membranes with candida is therefore not a disease per se. Symptoms and syndromes develop only when certain favorable external factors, such as, in particular, a weakened immune system and a disturbed barrier function of the skin and mucous membrane, are added. Furthermore, Candida yeasts use a variety of mechanisms with which they can interfere with the defense against infection and subvert. In Candida albicans, the most common cause of Candida infections, these are particularly pronounced.

General risk factors for a Candida infection are for example

Changes in the skin or mucous membranes, which facilitate the spread and penetration into the body of the fungus. These include, for example, chronic wounds, chronic moisturization of the skin (for example in the body wrinkles), increased sweat tendency in case of insufficient evaporation or if the skin is sealed off from the air supply, for example by dressings (occlusion). A weakened immune defense, for example, in congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, as it occurs during chemotherapy or tumors.

An immune deficiency can also occur as a result of infections, severe burns, metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus or stress. Old people and very small infants or premature babies also often have only reduced defenses. Some medications, such as corticosteroids, suppress or impair the function of the immune system and thus promote candida infections. A treatment with antibiotics can change the normal skin and intestinal flora and thus allow the fungus to grow more.

Special risk factors for oral thrush

Poorly fitting dentures can promote candidosis in the mouth (oral thrush) through mucosal irritation. The same applies to a dry mouth due to low saliva production. Otherwise, oral thrush primarily affects infants and adults with a weakened immune system (for example during chemotherapy, tumors or AIDS). Smoking also promotes the formation of a mouth ooze.
